Description

Pittenweem Priory has a rich history spanning over eight centuries. Established as a manorial base for a priory on the Isle of May in the 12th century, it was later transferred to the great Augustinian priory of St Andrews in the 14th century.

The island community was disbanded after this transfer, but the manorial function continued in Pittenweem. By the mid-15th century, a small monastic community had been established there, which thrived for over a century before being dissolved following the Protestant Reformation.

This book presents the first full-scale treatment of Pittenweem Priory's history, combining meticulous research with archival, archaeological and architectural material to provide a comprehensive understanding of the priory's role in local and national contexts.
