Description
Pina Bausch was born in 1940 in Solingen, Germany. At fourteen, she began her dance training at Folkwang School in Essen, where she studied under renowned choreographer Kurt Jooss.
Jooss's fusion of classical and modern dance had a lasting impact on Bausch's work. In 1959, she received a scholarship to study and perform in New York City for three years, during which time she danced with several prominent companies, including the Metropolitan Opera Ballet.
Bausch returned to Essen to join Jooss's company, becoming its director and securing international recognition. Her legacy extends beyond her own work, as she received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Kioto award.
