Description

Photography's Other Histories presents a radically different account of photographic history, moving beyond its current Euro-American center of gravity. This collection describes photography as a globally disseminated and locally appropriated medium, highlighting the extraordinary diversity of non-Western photography. Richly illustrated with over 100 images, the book explores the role of photography in raising historical consciousness from various regional, cultural, and historical perspectives. It includes first-person pieces by indigenous Australians and a Seminole/Muskogee/Dine' artist, as well as essays analyzing representations of colonial subjects and highlighting the visionary quality of popular photography. The book chronicles diverse practices that have flourished in postcolonial societies, including early-twentieth-century Peru and contemporary India, Kenya, and Nigeria. It recasts popular photography around the world, not simply reproducing culture but creating it.
