Description

The Persian Letters offers a unique glimpse into the spirit of the European Enlightenment. Written in an engaging epistolary format, this work explores various topics, including human nature, society, religion, and morality, amidst a tale marked by sex, violence, and wit. Raymond MacKenzie's new translation accurately reflects the mood and character of Montesquieu's work, while his introduction provides valuable context on the period and its author. This edition also includes supplementary materials such as a calendar, bibliographies, and related texts that offer insight into the legacy of The Persian Letters. These selections from works by George Lyttelton, Voltaire, Oliver Goldsmith, and Maria Edgeworth provide further understanding of the era's intellectual landscape and the enduring influence of Montesquieu's writing.
