Description
Brion Gysin's Permutations is a groundbreaking collection of permutation poems, first written manually and later assisted by a computer. This early example of computer-generated literature features short phrases and sentences whose constituent words are exhaustively rearranged over the course of the text. Written between 1958 and 1982, the poems were initially published in books and audio recordings, with some derived from a 1960 BBC radio commission. This collection brings together all published and transcribable versions of each poem, as well as a short text by Gysin that contextualizes the work. The poems are organized in chronological order by first publication or first recording, allowing readers to explore the playful systematicity that underlies this remarkable body of work. Brion Gysin was a multidisciplinary artist, author, and poet, born in 1916 and based in New York. This collection is a significant part of his oeuvre, showcasing his innovative approach to language and form.
