Description

Performing Care: A New Perspective on Socially Engaged Performance This edited collection brings together essays that explore the intersection of theatre and performance with care ethics, care studies, health and social care. It challenges our understanding of the caring encounter as a performed, embodied experience, and examines how performance can be understood as caring or uncaring. The book draws on international settings to investigate how performance might be conceptualized as artful, aesthetic, authentic, or 'staged'. By placing socially-engaged performance in dialogue with theories and practices of care, the contributors consider how performance operates as a mode of caring for others, and how debates between theory and practice can foster a greater understanding of the embodied experience of care. Through an examination of diverse care performances, this book interrogates the boundaries between care practice and performance, and considers how the field of performance might be challenged by an examination of inter-human care.
