Description

The Barbary Coast was a notorious area in San Francisco, notorious for its lawlessness, gambling casinos, and its bordellos and madams. It was here that a dark and little-known vice thrived, one that was guarded with great secrecy: the male houses of prostitution. These establishments, known as peg-houses, catered to a clientele willing to pay extraordinary prices for the services of young boys, often as young as seven or as old as seventeen. These boys were often lured or kidnapped from all over the world, supplied to the peg-houses by an international slave trade. Once in these places, they were subjected to a life of addiction and exploitation, forced to provide services to customers who would use them as nothing more than subservient slaves. The boys were often given drugs to keep them under control, and their bodies were modified with wooden pegs of increasingly size to make them more compliant. The Barbary Coast's dark history is a grim reminder of the tolerance and lawlessness that characterized the early days of the California Gold Rush. This book sheds light on a shocking and little-known aspect of San Francisco's heritage, one that is both disturbing and thought-provoking.
