The brothers Paul and John Nash were influential figures in twentieth century British design. Paul Nash is now recognised as the most significant war artist of the last century, while his brother John was known for his humorous illustrations and superb plant drawings. Both men worked at the Royal College of Art, where they encouraged a generation of designer artists. Paul promoted design as an art form, serving on committees such as the Design and Industries Association and as President of the Society of Industrial Artists. His clients included prominent publishers like Curwen Press and Golden Cockerel Presses. John Nash's work is characterised by his Edward Lear influenced style, with superb wood engravings that illustrate numerous books and publications.
