Description
Patron Gods and Patron Lords: The Semiotics of Classic Maya Community Cults
This comprehensive study explores the central role of patron deity cults in the political relationships between rulers and their subjects, as well as among different Maya kingdoms. Joanne Baron draws on a range of evidence, including inscriptions, images, and artifacts, to shed new light on how the Classic Maya polity was organized and maintained.
By examining the use of patron deity effigies, temples, and acts of devotion, Baron reveals how these practices were used to negotiate group membership, social entitlements, and obligations between individuals and communities. This book offers a fresh perspective on the belief system of Maya communities and its role in shaping their rulership.
