Paper Revolutions: An Invisible Avant-Garde challenges conventional accounts of experimental art in postwar Germany. Sarah E. James presents a radical rethinking of artistic practices in the former East Germany, highlighting the work of four artists who created ephemeral works often marginalized by art history. These artists, uniquely positioned outside academies and the art market, produced bodies of work animated by the radical legacies of the interwar avant-garde. They championed collectivized experiences and believed in art's potential to change the world, rejecting the idea of art as a commodity or rarefied object. Through her examination of Hermann Glöckner, Carlfriedrich Claus, Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt, and Karla Sachse, James shows that these artists produced some of the most significant experimental art to emerge from Germany during the Cold War.
