In a world that's almost indistinguishable from our own, strange occurrences begin to happen. In the 1950s, ordinary people start to be possessed by entities that seem to come from the collective unconscious. These entities take many forms, ranging from benevolent to malevolent. As a young boy, Del Pierce is one of the victims of possession, and he's eventually exorcised with the help of his family and a psychiatrist. But years later, after a car accident, Del finds himself possessed once again - this time by an entity known as the Hellion. Desperate for help, Del turns to various individuals who claim to be able to assist him, including a science fiction writer and a nun. However, Del soon realizes that the solution to his problem may not be what he expected, and that the cure could be worse than the disease itself.
