Description
Outcasts of Empire: Japan's Rule on Taiwan's Savage Border, 1874-1945 (Asia Pacific Modern) (Volume 16) This book explores how capitalism failed to integrate Taiwan into the modern state during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Paul D. Barclay examines the role of interpreters, chiefs, and trading-post operators who mediated relations between the state and indigenous peoples on Taiwan's "savage border" under successive Qing and Japanese regimes. The author argues that these mediators rose to prominence and faded from power as global transformations took place during the "long nineteenth century". Despite their influence, the colonial state lacked sufficient resources to integrate the indigenes into its disciplinary apparatus. As a result, the Indigenous Territory was created, which still exists today as a legacy of Japanese imperialism, local initiatives, and the commodification of culture.
