Description

The history of perversion in the West is a complex and multifaceted subject. Elisabeth Roudinesco explores this topic through a study of emblematic figures from various eras, including Gilles de Rais, mystics, flagellants, the Marquis de Sade, and others. Perversion has long been viewed as something monstrous and alien to human nature, yet it can also be seen as a manifestation of creativity and self-transcendence. The perverse individuals studied by Roudinesco exhibit qualities that are both abject and sublime, reflecting our own darker impulses and the duality of human nature. This book offers a thought-provoking examination of perversion's role in shaping Western culture and society, challenging common perceptions and stereotypes along the way.
