Description
Orlando West, Soweto: An illustrated history by Nieftagodien and Sally Gaule is a detailed account of the township's development. In the aftermath of World War I, Johannesburg's urban growth became more controlled, with the aim of managing the influx of Africans into the city. The Native (Urban) Areas Act of 1923 was introduced to regulate this movement. The Act was a complex piece of legislation that balanced competing interests. On one hand, it reflected the Stallard Commission's views on African labour, while on the other, it acknowledged the need for controlled settlement areas to provide a reliable workforce. In response to growing housing demands, Orlando township was established in 1931, with thousands of families relocated from urban slums. The new township was marketed as a model community, featuring tree-lined streets, business opportunities, and recreational facilities. However, this vision of a 'garden city' for Africans has been subject to historical critique, revealing the complexities and challenges faced by its residents.
