Description
Orchards by Holly Thompson tells the story of Kana Goldberg, a half-Japanese, half-Jewish American girl who is struggling to come to terms with the suicide of her classmate. Feeling guilty and unsure of how to process her emotions, Kana's parents send her to her mother's ancestral home in Japan for the summer.
As Kana spends time tending to her family's orange groves, she begins to learn more about her heritage and the culture of her relatives. However, her mixed identity makes it difficult for her to fit in, especially under the critical eye of her traditional grandmother. Despite these challenges, Kana starts to find a sense of belonging and understanding.
But just as Kana is starting to heal, news arrives that sends her world spinning out of control once again. With its thoughtful exploration of grief, guilt, and identity, Orchards is a powerful and moving novel about one girl's journey towards healing and self-discovery.
