Description
In April 1820, Glasgow and Ayrshire were the scenes of a dramatic series of events. A strike by 60,000 weavers and other workers demanded political reform and better living and working conditions, sparking revolution. The culmination of years of unrest, this was the aftermath of the Peterloo massacre in Manchester in 1819, where the government violently suppressed a peaceful crowd. The Scottish Radicals, marching under a flag calling for 'Scotland Free, or Scotland a Desart', clashed with government soldiers at Bonnymuir near Falkirk, leading to a bloody skirmish. The city of Glasgow was placed under curfew, and a crowd in Greenock was attacked by the Port Glasgow militia, resulting in the deaths of a 65-year-old woman and a young boy. The aftermath saw three men hanged and nineteen transported to Australia from Scotland. Maggie Craig sets this pivotal event within the wider social and political context of the time, painting a vivid portrait of those caught up in the momentous events.
