Description

America's playgrounds were once full of tottering seesaws, dizzying merry-go-rounds, and towering metal slides. This visual tribute documents their evolution between 1920 and 1975, celebrating iconic structures in our culture and the collective memories of generations. Contemporary photos of vintage playground equipment are juxtaposed with images from classic catalogs, postcards, and photographs. The result is a haunting time capsule showing a rapidly vanishing part of our country's cultural heritage. With gorgeous photographs that will transport you back in time, this book reminds us of just how important play can really be. By examining the evolution of playgrounds over several decades, Once Upon a Playground provides a unique insight into America's past and its enduring impact on our lives today.
