Derek Parfit presents the third volume of On What Matters, his landmark work of moral philosophy. In this volume, he develops further his influential treatment of reasons, normativity, and the meaning of moral discourse, engaging with his critics to show the way to resolution of their differences. Parfit explores what it means for things to matter, in the sense that we all have reasons to care about these things. He discusses three main kinds of meta-ethical theory: Normative Naturalism, Quasi-Realist Expressivism, and Non-Metaphysical Non-Naturalism, which he now calls Non-Realist Cognitivism. Parfit's work builds on the ideas presented in Does Anything Really Matter?, a collection edited by Peter Singer. He argues that certain theories can be combined, and that these combinations may offer new insights into the nature of morality.
