On to Oregon: The Diaries of Mary Walker and Myra Eells
In 1838, two missionary couples joined a party heading west as reinforcements to the Oregon Mission. Just married at the time, Mary Walker and Myra Eells embarked on a perilous journey from Missouri to Oregon, keeping diaries throughout their months on the treacherous trail.
After spending a winter at the Whitman mission in present-day Washington, the Walkers and Eellses moved north to do missionary work among the Spokane Indians. Mary Richardson Walker's diary is notable for its richness, offering a unique perspective from a woman pioneering in the West.
