David Goldblatt's On the Mines is a powerful exploration of life in South Africa, born from his childhood experiences growing up in Randfontein. In the 1960s, as the gold mines surrounding his hometown began to fail, Goldblatt turned to photography to document their decline. This re-designed and expanded edition features thirty-one new mostly unpublished photos, including colour images, alongside eleven deleted images, a postscript by Nadine Gordimer, and a text by Goldblatt reflecting on his childhood and the original 1973 book. The result is a unique and poignant document of life during and after apartheid. A collaboration between Goldblatt and Steidl, On the Mines marks the beginning of an ambitious series of re-prints and new books that will publish Goldblatt's life work.
