Edinburgh's tram system was one of the most modern in the UK at its height. Operating from 1905, it featured cable-operated routes that were later converted to electric traction in the early 1920s. By the time the last trams ran in 1956, the network had expanded to around 360 trams and was considered a significant part of the city's transportation infrastructure. Despite its success, the system was short-lived, with the Corporation announcing plans to convert it to bus operation just four years after the war. The decision was made, and the last tram ran on November 16th, 1956. However, in 2014, trams returned to Edinburgh's streets, albeit with a modern twist.
