Oahspe is a spiritual text that was written through the author's hands by an intelligence other than his own. This phenomenon, known as automatic writing, is not uncommon among Spiritualists, who believe that it can be a means of communication with the spirit world. The author investigated this phenomenon with over 200 mediums, traveling extensively to test their claims. He found that many mediums were subject to involuntary movements of the hands or entrancement, and believed that angels were controlling them. However, the author was not satisfied with the communications he received and sought to learn more about the Spirit world.
