Description

The story of Nuff Sed begins in Victorian London, where a lighterman's life was marked by hardship and struggle. Frederick Horsfall's experiences unloading ships at the great exhibition of 1851 set the stage for his children and grandchildren to follow in his footsteps, joining the Royal Marines, sailors, and soldiers who fought in the great war. As the story unfolds, it follows two other families - the Jennings and the Spiers - whose paths eventually cross with those of the Horsfalls. The Jennings family's ratcatcher, William Jennings, and his son Ernest, a Metropolitan policeman, navigate their own lives amidst the poverty and crime of East London's Chinatown. Meanwhile, the Spiers family faces its own challenges as they emigrate to Australia and America. The book is based on original letters and documents kept by the descendants of these families, offering a unique glimpse into their lives and experiences during some of history's most dramatic times.
