Cees Nooteboom's Berlin is a unique and insightful account of his year-and-a-half residence in the city from 1989. This period was marked by one of the most significant historical turning points of the 20th century: the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany. The book offers a personal and nuanced exploration of the changing landscape of a country that Nooteboom has written about extensively throughout his work. He draws on his own experiences to create vivid portraits of the cities, landscapes, and cultural heritage of East and West Germany. With his characteristic curiosity and critical eye, Nooteboom provides an intimate and intelligent portrayal of daily life in Berlin during this pivotal time. Through a combination of observations, reflections, and engaging narratives, Nooteboom sheds light on the complex transition that led to Germany's reunification.
