Description
The North American X-15: A Revolutionary Aircraft. In 1959, the US military and NASA began operating the X-15, a rocket-powered hypersonic research aircraft that made history with its incredible speeds and altitudes. This book tells the story of the X-series aircraft research programme, which successfully pushed through the sound barrier for the first time in 1947. The X-15 was a significant leap forward from its predecessors, introducing new technologies such as attitude control thrusters and telemetry systems. Its design paved the way for future spacecraft, including reusable vehicles capable of landing on land rather than water. The aircraft's partnership with research into 'Lifting Bodies' also laid the groundwork for the Space Shuttle. The X-15 made 199 flights, reaching speeds over 4,000 mph and altitudes above 270,000 ft. Although three X-15s were built, one was lost following re-entry from high altitude, while another was severely damaged but rebuilt for further exploration.
