Description
Shigeru Mizuki's NonNonBa is a poignant and humorous memoir that explores the author's childhood fascination with yokai, spirit monsters from Japanese folklore. Encouraged by his grandmother, a gruff but kind woman named NonNonBa, Mizuki delves into the supernatural world of his youth, reflecting on its lasting impact on his life and art. This English translation of Mizuki's best-loved work offers a unique glimpse into Japan in transition, as well as a touching portrayal of childhood and growing up. Translated from the Japanese by Jocelyne Allen, NonNonBa is a fascinating blend of sociohistorical context and supernatural wonder. A poignant and thought-provoking read, NonNonBa has won recognition for its nuanced exploration of the human experience.
