Description
Noli me tangere, a novel that has been unfairly relegated to the margins of our literary canon, yet remains alive and vibrant. This work, penned by José Rizal, cost him his life, as he was executed in the Philippines in 1896 for his writing.
Written with drama, humor, and irony, this deeply anticlerical novel reflects the stifling provincial life of a colonial past. Just two years after Rizal's execution, Spain lost its overseas possessions. The young Filipino heir, Crisóstomo Ibarra, returns to the archipelago after time spent in Europe, having recently been in Switzerland and Spain.
His father's death in prison and the circumstances of his burial ignite a sense of hatred towards the omnipotent Father Dámaso, which ultimately leads to his downfall. A story that eerily echoes Rizal's own experiences.
