Description

The term "no humans involved" emerged in response to the 1991 beating of Rodney King. It was initially used by the Los Angeles Police Department as shorthand for casework involving Black and Latino men and sex workers. Jamaican scholar Sylvia Wynter challenged her colleagues to consider their own role in perpetuating this exclusionary definition of human. This collection of artworks responds to Wynter's prompt, exploring the social divisions present today and opportunities for social unity. The featured artists use a range of mediums, including performance, sculpture, photography, and found objects, to address issues such as marginalization, social hierarchy, and cultural identity. The works on display are a contemporary response to Wynter's call to action, created by a diverse group of artists including Eddie Aparicio, Tau Lewis, Las Nietas De Nonó, Sondra Perry, Sangree, Wangshui, and Wilmer Wilson IV.
