Description

A man is shot dead in a first class compartment on the Night Mail from Calcutta to Jamalpur. Detective Inspector Jim Stringer was sleeping in the next compartment and may have been the intended target. As he investigates, he uncovers a complex web of intrigue involving venomous snakes being placed in the railway carriages. The country is tense with political and racial unrest, and Jim's own life is complicated by his daughter's connection to a Maharajah's son. His colleague, Major Fisher, seems brusque and untrustworthy, adding to Jim's concerns for his family's safety. As Jim delves deeper into the mystery, he must navigate the treacherous landscape of colonial India in 1923, where loyalty, power, and deception are all at stake.
