Description
Newcomers: Book One by Lojze Kovacic In 1938, the Kovacic family's life was forever changed as they were forced to leave their home in Switzerland. Ten-year-old Lojze recounts his family's journey to Slovenia, where he had always imagined a beautiful homeland from fairytales. Instead, he and his family faced misery, hunger, and hostility. As they struggled to make a new life, Lojze became increasingly isolated, refusing to learn the Slovenian language and falling silent in the face of adversity. This powerful and poignant memoir is told from the perspective of a child, with memories interrupted by fragments and visions of another time. The result is a heart-wrenching description of a period torn apart by conflict. Kovacic's writing is clear and direct, offering a profound and unflinching portrayal of a difficult world.
