His SBD Dauntless dove into a near-vertical attack on the heart of Japan's Imperial Navy, which had struck Pearl Harbor six months earlier. The outcome of this pivotal battle hung in the balance as the US desperately sought its first major victory of World War II. Kleiss's 20,000-foot dive helped forever alter the war's trajectory. He released three bombs at the last possible instant and pulled out of his gut-wrenching 9-g dive just above the roiling Pacific Ocean. His perfectly placed bombs struck the aircraft carrier Kaga, one of Japan's most important capital ships, in an inferno from which it would never recover. The aftermath of this momentous event was marked by tragedy for Kleiss and his fellow naval aviators. However, Kleiss remained unbowed and returned to the air that same afternoon, fatally striking another enemy carrier, Hiryu.
