Description

The Mira calligraphiae monumenta is a remarkable example of two artistic disciplines combined. In the 16th century, Emperor Rudolf II commissioned master calligrapher Georg Bocskay to create a model book of calligraphy, which was later filled with intricate illustrations by miniaturist Joris Hoefnagel. This codex features forty-one pages of exquisite botanical images, including insects, fruits, and flowers, alongside the original calligraphy. The accompanying commentary provides detailed explanations of Hoefnagel's craftsmanship and the significance of his work. Nature Illuminated reproduces these remarkable pages, offering a unique glimpse into the artistic achievements of the Central European Renaissance.
