Description

Émile Bernard's intimate account of his friendship with Vincent van Gogh offers a unique perspective into the Dutch artist's process and artistic preoccupations. This collection of letters, prefaces, and reflections chronicles their relationship in the 1890s, including Bernard's attempts to have Van Gogh's work recognized after his death.

Through these pages, readers gain insight into the artistic community they inhabited, as well as notable figures such as Claude Monet and Paul Gauguin. The letters written by Van Gogh to a young Bernard highlight the significance of their friendship, while also revealing words of advice and ruminations on his own practice, inspirations, and creative struggles.

Introduced by Van Gogh specialist Martin Bailey, this volume presents a sensitive and discerning portrait of the artist that goes beyond his reputation as a troubled genius. Published for the first time in English, these texts provide a fresh perspective on Van Gogh's life and artistic legacy.
