Description

Louis Armstrong's autobiographical writings offer a unique window into his life and art. This comprehensive analysis explores how Armstrong performed his story across various media and for different audiences, challenging common views of the musician. By combining approaches from autobiography theory, literary criticism, intermedia studies, cultural history, and musicology, Daniel Stein sheds new light on Armstrong's oeuvre and its place in American history and twentieth-century media culture. The result is a nuanced understanding of this complex figure and his enduring impact on jazz and popular culture.
