Description
Bartolomé Esteban Murillo's genre paintings offer a unique glimpse into his artistic vision. While he is often associated with religious subject matter, some of his most iconic works depict ordinary people in everyday scenes. This book explores these lesser-known works, shedding new light on the artist's innovative portrayals of youth and age, romance and seduction, and faith and charity. Through insightful essays and detailed commentaries, this volume examines Murillo's art through various lenses, including antiquity, northern culture, portraiture, and diversity in the city of Seville. The catalogue features over fifty works included in a recent exhibition, offering a nuanced understanding of their complex meanings and significance in both their own time and our own. Generously illustrated with high-quality images, this book provides a fresh perspective on Murillo's genre paintings, revealing their importance as cultural artifacts of 17th-century Spain.
