In May 1939, tensions are running high as German refugees flood into England to escape the Nazi regime. At Scrope House School, a progressive co-educational institution, a case of apparent pyromania among students has the headmaster on edge. James Hardwicke, an expert on twins, is invited to investigate, and soon finds himself entangled in a murder mystery when sherry is poisoned at a faculty party.

As James delves deeper into the case, he must navigate the complex web of relationships between students, teachers, and refugees. With his investigation unfolding against the backdrop of war and social change, James must decide whether the fires and the murder are linked, and if the victim was intended or an accidental casualty.
