Description

Brazil's foremost twentieth-century poet, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, is celebrated in Penguin Classics for the first time. This selection draws on his personal anthology, Antologia Poética, to showcase his finest works within various themes.

De Andrade's poetry explores individuality, family, love, and social confrontation, all while breaking free from traditional verse and meter rules. His unique style has been widely recognized, earning him a place as Brazil's most important modernist poet of the twentieth century.

A testament to his enduring legacy is the statue on Rio's sea front, featuring one of his poems, 'Friendly Song', even printed on Brazilian currency. This collection offers a glimpse into the life and work of this remarkable poet, whose words continue to resonate with readers today.
