Description
Tony Piza's decision to take a year off after college with pay sets him on a path that will change his life forever. In 1973, he lands a job teaching sixth grade at a Catholic school in Staten Island, New York, despite having no experience and being vastly out of his depth. His attempts to connect with his students are met with resistance from the school's strict authorities, who are equally unimpressed by his irreverent sense of humor. As Tony struggles to find his footing, he faces opposition from a stern but effective colleague, Sister Theresa, and catches the eye of a straight-talking teacher, Colleen O'Brien. With his job hanging in the balance, Tony must confront his own shortcomings and learn to connect with his students on a deeper level. Will he be able to turn things around and save his position, or will this ill-fated decision prove disastrous? This novel is a humorous and poignant exploration of one man's misadventures in education.
