Description
Lorna Goodison's latest poetry collection, Mother Muse, marks her return to publication in Canada after nine years. This powerful and evocative work showcases the poet's unique voice and range, moving seamlessly from praise songs to laments and autobiography to collective past. Goodison's poems are characterised by their lyrical quality and nuanced exploration of Jamaican lore and tradition. The book celebrates a wide cross-section of women, including two under-regarded figures in Jamaican music: Sister Mary Ignatius and Anita "Margarita" Mahfood. These women's stories are woven together with the poet's own autobiography to create a collection of formidable scope and intelligence. With its seamless blend of the personal and the political, Mother Muse is a compelling and thought-provoking read that will appeal to fans of poetry and those interested in Jamaican culture and history.
