Description
Mosaics in Roman Britain by Anthony Beeson explores the development and use of this ancient art form in Britain from the time of the Roman invasion to the end of Roman rule. The book delves into both the technical aspects of mosaics and their construction, including prefabrication techniques. Beeson examines a range of mosaics, from those found in urban centres to rural locations, many of which have been lost but are preserved through coloured engravings. The author also shares his own research on notable examples, such as the recently discovered Boxford mosaic, and provides reconstructions of figured mosaics based on similar finds elsewhere in the Roman Empire. As a leading expert on Roman mosaics, Beeson brings extensive knowledge to this subject, drawing on his experience as archivist for the Association for the Study and Preservation of Roman Mosaics.
