Molière - The Imaginary Invalid Le Malade Imaginaire By Molière Born in Paris to a prosperous family, Jean-Baptiste Poquelin became known as Molière. He began his career as a valet to the King's chamber and keeper of carpets and upholstery, but eventually turned to the stage at 21. After founding the Illustre Théâtre with actress Madeleine Béjart, he toured provincial circuits before returning to Parisian theatres in 1658. Molière's plays often attacked social conventions and caused both outrage and applause. His works include 'Tartuffe', 'The Misanthrope', 'The Miser' and 'The School for Wives'. Tragically, his own life was cut short by pulmonary tuberculosis. In the final play he wrote, 'The Imaginary Invalid', he played the hypochondriac Argan before collapsing on stage. This edition of 'Le Malade Imaginaire' presents a key work in Molière's oeuvre, showcasing his unique blend of satire and comedy.
