Description
Modernist Intimacies by Elsa Högberg explores how modernism shaped our understanding of intimacy in the early 20th century. This book reveals that modernist art and social practices played a significant role in the emergence of modern intimacy, which cannot be seen as separate from socio-political realities. Through twelve original chapters, Högberg examines various aspects of modern intimacy, including music-making, wartime radio broadcasting, transnational relations, diary-writing, sexual pleasure, queer religiosity, and same-sex love. By analyzing a range of literary texts and other media such as church murals and sonic archives, the book highlights the enduring resonance of modernist intimacies in our own time. This collection offers fresh perspectives on intimacy as a vital dimension of modernist aesthetic and social practices, challenging traditional views of this concept.
