Description
This comprehensive survey of Arabic literature from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day offers a critical examination of creative writing in the Arab world. As Western literary forms such as the novel, short story, and drama gained influence, Arab writers adapted these styles alongside their indigenous tradition.
The book explores the attempts made by Arab men and women to meet the requirements of the modern world through the lens of imported and native literary forms. With extensive bibliography and quoted material in English translation, this authoritative volume provides a valuable resource for scholars and readers alike.
