Iceland in the 1960s was a nation of poets. Hekla had always dreamed of becoming one too, but as a woman, her opportunities were limited. She packed her bags, including James Joyce's Ulysses and a Remington typewriter, and set off for Reykjavik with a manuscript to share. Hekla moved in with her friend Jon, who longed to work in the theater but was stuck on fishing trawlers instead. Both friends felt out of place in their small, conservative world. Yet, as JFK's assassination shook the globe, and hemlines rose, Iceland began to change.
