Description

Henry Hayward's life is turned upside down when his girlfriend leaves him. In an attempt to recover, he joins an army-affiliated contracting crew that takes him overseas to a Canadian base in Afghanistan. There, he finds solace among friends and begins to mend. However, everything changes during a roadside incursion that proves fatal. Henry's survival is marked by guilt, and upon returning home, he resolves to care for those around him, including Martha Groves, whose boyfriend was killed in the same conflict. As Henry tries to rebuild his life, he collects a community of people who depend on him. But he must confront his own family history and social infidelity. Meanwhile, Martha has a revelation that may change everything. This emotionally affecting novel explores the power and violence of self-creation, revealing truths about human nature's frailties and miracles. Through its exploration of identity, responsibility, and community, Minister Without Portfolio offers a nuanced portrayal of the complexities of human relationships.
