Description
The M.52 Gateway to Supersonic Flight is a personal account of the development and cancellation of Britain's first supersonic jet project. In 1943, Miles Aircraft was awarded a top-secret contract to build an aircraft capable of reaching 1000mph. The research that followed was based on wind tunnel tests conducted by the Armament Research Dept, which led to the design of a thin-winged, bullet-shaped aircraft. The story takes a surprising turn when it is revealed that the research was passed on to the Americans in 1944, and production of the second prototype was halted just six months before the planned supersonic trials. The reasons behind this cancellation remain unclear, and Captain Eric Brown and Dennis Bancroft, the Chief Aerodynamicist on the M.52 project, have now come together to shed new light on the mystery. This book provides a unique insight into one of the most intriguing episodes in British aviation history, and is written by those who were directly involved in the project.
