Description
Christopher Isherwood's postwar novels were groundbreaking in their exploration of gay identity and American culture. This book explores how Isherwood, a midcentury gay American writer, successfully navigated the challenges of his time to create a unique literary voice. By immersing himself in the gay reading, writing, and publishing communities in Cold War America, Isherwood refashioned himself as an American writer while remaining true to his queer identity. Drawing on extensive archival material, including manuscript drafts and unpublished correspondence, this study reveals how Isherwood's novels, such as "The World in the Evening" and "A Single Man", blended elements of both gay and middlebrow fiction. Middlebrow Queer sheds new light on Cold War America's gay print cultures, from protest novels to pulp fiction.
