Iraqi American artist Michael Rakowitz has recreated Room H from the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud to scale, using Arab-language newspapers and wrappers from food products imported from the Middle East. This sculptural recreation is a response to the looting of the palace by Western archaeologists and the destruction caused by ISIS in 2015. The result is a complex palimpsest, with only those panels that were in situ at the time of the palace's destruction remaining. Areas where reliefs had already been removed by earlier excavators are left blank, creating a layered narrative of removal and erasure. This unique work showcases Rakowitz's use of found materials and his exploration of the complexities of cultural heritage and ownership. Published with the Wellin Museum of Art, this book presents a fascinating example of contemporary art and its engagement with history and culture.
