Merlyn Evans: A Life and Work Shaped by Conviction. This monograph explores the life and art of Merlyn Evans, an artist deeply affected by poverty and violence in Glasgow during the late 1920s and early 1930s. His work combines plant, crustacean, and mechanical forms to reflect psychological, ethical, and political concerns. Evans's style was influenced by Surrealism, but his subject matter became increasingly social and political as he reflected on economic distress at home and the European crisis. After World War II, he turned to etching and aquatint, developing a distinguished printmaking career alongside his painting. Throughout his work, Evans drew on psychology, philosophy, politics, mechanics, optics, and art history, as well as modernist literature and contemporary poetry. His paintings made explicit reference to economic depression, atrocity, and war, while his artistic practice remained an engagement with life, reflecting his conviction that art should be a response to the world around him.
