Description
François Recanati presents a new theory of mental files, which challenges traditional views on reference in language and thought. According to Recanati, we refer through mental files that act as modes of presentation. These files are not simply containers for information but rather have their own semantics, governed by a specific type of relation to objects in the environment. The type of file corresponds to the type of contextual relation it exploits, even in cases where the file is detached or serves as an encyclopedia entry. This approach offers a fresh perspective on how we understand reference and its relationship to language and thought.
